Some of the most beautiful plants are hybrid. Hybrid means to mix different aspects of things, for example a pear and an apple equals a nashi which equates to a most likeable fruit.
Today as I ran my eyes over the news headlines I came upon an article that highlighted our fear of the unfamiliar.
Disneyland Resort, a place where people stay to connect with their inner child, has banned one of their employees from appearing in front of customers while wearing her headscarf.
Imane Boudlal, 26, is Muslim and wore the scarf in observance of Ramadan. Her religious commitment was punished as she was forced out of her position as restaurant hostess and relegated out of sight.
It is strange to think that every second of the day people are still being vilified for being different to other people’s norms.
It makes me question, do I judge people who are different from me?
Admittedly when it comes to hippies, I have a few anxieties. I find it strange that some of them don’t shave. But just because I like my underarms clean does not mean I should judge those that are content with being all natural. In fact I should admire their stance on rebelling against social norms.
I like to think I grew up in a family that taught love and respect for all human beings.
Yet my almost perfect upbringing did not protect me from the rampant judgements that plague my norm monitor.
We all have hang ups, people who grate, ebbing away at our patience.
I say let the people grate! Let those we fear as different run rampant on our stifled views. Perhaps then we’ll grow and maybe even learn that some of our ideals are only established because of what we’ve been exposed to.
I’m off to hug a hippy, I recon that’s what Jesus would do.
