The History of Mustard: Mustard was established in 2003. It came into being after young adults from a church in Kew (Victoria) became involved in one of the local schools; via students from their youth group, who were running lunchtime Bible studies in the school. Mustard began with these young adults going into the school to support and help out these student leaders. It became clear that both the students and chaplains really appreciated the support that the young adult volunteers could bring. The relationship between the church and the school strengthened and the church was able to become more involved in school activities and even in the curriculum! They began to run seminars and retreats in the school. They were also able to talk about different life issues and the Bible's perspective on them. The potential for this sort of relationship between other churches and schools was obvious. So Mustard was established to encourage churches and schools to connect and provide a network for people engaged in this sort of ministry.
Today Mustard looks a little like this…
We continue to run creative and interactive seminars and retreats in schools. These sessions have a focus on the life and teaching of Jesus and use a range of different elements to allow the students to grapple with different ideas relevant to their lives.
We oversee Lunchtime Groups in around 25 schools in Melbourne, led by one or two young adult volunteers. Each group is unique in it's style, objectives and practice, but are united around Mustard's doing, hope and shape. Examples of a lunchtime group's activities are: study of the Bible, prayer, discussion of social and personal issues, social activities and fundraising for social justice causes. Mustard provides training, support and encouragement for the students, leaders and school staff involved in each group.
The Mustard network is diverse and growing and is beautiful representation of God's Kingdom. We welcome people from all churches and denominations to join in our vibrant ministry.
